Street and Sewer Maintenance Division

This division is located at 1301 2nd Avenue and has 52 employees at this location. This division handles all calls concerning potholes, broken curbs, sewer backups, streets that need sweeping of dirt and/or debris, rough alleys that need graded, and barricades that need to be set up for parades, etc. Citizens can also request barricades for special events in their neighborhoods through the City Clerk's office and would then pick them up at this location. Calls from 911 regarding picking up evidence are handled here as well as cleaning up glass on the street after accidents. All calls concerning slick streets and snow and ice removal are handled at this location. Two clerks working 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. answer these calls at 328-4641.

During the winter months the city operates two 12-hour shifts for snow removal using 45 drivers or "operators". One shift works 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the other 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. The City has 24 pieces of equipment they put out on the road to clear the snow and depending on the wind and temperature conditions would usually take around 24-36 hours to clear off a 3 inch snow. There is 3000 tons of salt used each winter and Council Bluffs is fortunate enough to own its own covered salt dome for storage of the salt. We share this dome with the County who has purchased the conveyor system for loading the salt onto the trucks.
